It's almost time to bring your new piglet home!
To ensure a smooth transition for your new piglet, we’ve compiled a list of recommended items you’ll need to prepare before bringing your piglet home.
We know bringing your new piglet home is very exciting! To help you prepare, we’ve put together this checklist to guide you through setting up your piglet’s indoor pen and provide product recommendations.
Your piglet will be sent home with detailed instructions on care & feeding.
Indoor piglet pen setup
Piglets need a quiet, comfortable space they can call their own. A place where they can sleep, have some alone time, and feel safe. You don’t want to make this space too big at first, because your piglet may get overwhelmed.
A sturdy pet playpen works best. Piglets should never be kept in a locked in a cage, dog kennel, glass pen, baby pack ‘n play, or crib, as these environments are not suitable for their needs.
When setting up their space, I arrange a bed or large pillow with plenty of blankets in one corner, a heavy water dispenser in another, toys in a third corner, and a litter box in the fourth. I always recommend using a water dispenser to ensure the piglet never runs out of water.
For the bottom of the pen, we recommend using a pet mat or a piece of vinyl flooring. This provides a sturdy, non-slip surface so your piglet can walk confidently and comfortably.
Some piggy parents like to use a silicone mat underneath the water and food dishes to catch spills and keep the area tidy.
Items To Prepare
Pet Playpen & Mat
Your piglet will need their own area. You create this space with a pet playpen.
For the bottom of the pen, we recommend using a pet mat or a piece of vinyl flooring. This provides a surface with grip, which is especially important for your piglet’s tiny hooves. Over time, they’ll become confident walking on smoother surfaces, like wood floors.
Potty/Litter Box
All our pigs here at Noble Mini Pigs come litter box trained.
We use recommend using either Potty Pads or Pine Pellets in their litter box. They can be purchased at most farm stores like Tractor Supply or Family Farm & Home. Never use cat litter.
The litter box should have an opening so that your little piggy can walk in and out with ease. Pigs do not like to climb over the high edge of a traditional cat litter boxes. We HIGHLY recommend using the litter box we linked. It’s the perfect height for piglets!
Pet Bed
We recommend providing a cozy, comfortable bed for your new baby. A small pet bed works well, but don’t forget to include a couple of soft blankets. Piglets love to burrow into their blankets!
Food Bowl & Gravity Water Bowl
You want a dish that is small and shallow enough for your piglet to easily reach. We recommend purchasing 3 of this feed dish, as this is what your piglet is used eating from and it has a silicone bottom to prevent it from sliding around.
We recommend a medium gravity water bowl. This is the water bowl your piglet is used to and what we use. Since pigs cannot sweat, they require water at all times so avoid getting a dish they can easily turn over.
Mazuri Youth Mini Pig Pellets
We will send your baby home with a small bag of food mix to start. However, you need to purchase a bag of MAZURI Youth Mini Pig Pellets. This can be purchased online from Chewy.com or directly from Mazuri.com. It is also available at Tractor Supply and Family Farm & Home.
Multivitamin & Supplements
Your piglet has already been started on a multivitamin: children’s chewable Flintstones vitamin with iron. This is an important supplement, as piglets need extra nutrients during their growth stages to support their overall health and development.
Other Items We Recommend
Pet Carrier
Highly recommend you purchase a pet carrier for your new piglet. For the ride back home, any vet visits, or vacation travels.
Toys
Mini pig toys, balls, squeaky toys. They love stuffed animals, especially a crinkle octopus. They also love snuffle mats! (Do not purchase any piggy poo & crew products, especially the “rooting mat”, if you have already purchased one throw it out.)
Bath & Grooming
You’ll need some tear-free unscented baby wash or something formulated for sensitive skin. As well as a soft-bristled bath scrubber. Also get some AVON Skin So Soft!
